To configure the 'Email' app on an Android device for access to Gmail, just follow the steps below: 1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings. 2. On your phone, press < Home >, then open the Email application. 3. On the 'Your accounts' page, select Next to get started with setup. 4. Enter your full Gmail address and password, then select Next. 5. On the next screen, you can give the account a nickname and choose the name to display on your outgoing messages. Tap Done. And you're done. You can verify your settings from the Inbox view by tapping < Menu > > Account settings. Incoming settings IMAP server: imap.gmail.com Port: 993 Security type: SSL (always) Outgoing settings SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com Port: 465 Security type: SSL (always) Now that your account is set up, learn how actions in your client sync with Gmail. ======================= DEFAULT SETTING IN ANDROID PORT AND MAIL SERVER NEVER WORK !!! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: What is Digital Radio Mondiale? Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is the follow-up technology for short, middle and long wave radio broadcasting. It offers the advantages of digital radio: The sound quality is clear and consistent and the devices are easy to use. DRM has been in development for a few years and has become a global standard. The acronym ?DRM? may be used for other things, but it always stands for Digital Radio Mondiale on our website unless stated otherwise. Where is the DW-BBC-DRM channel available? The DW-BBC-DRM channel is primarily available in Germany, France and the UK, sometimes also in neighboring countries ? even in Russia, Serbia and Scandinavia. The digital programming is also broadcast in Asia, two hours to India and one hour to China. Besides DW and the BBC, are there other broadcasters using DRM? You can find a list of the stations having DRM transmissions on the website of the DRM Consortium (www.drm.org or at www.drm-dx.de). Do I need a new radio in order to receive digital programming? Yes. You will find information about suitable DRM radios and receiving equipment under www.drm.org Are DRM car stereos also available? No, not yet. For all of the latest information, especially on new products, go to the DRM Consortium website (www.drm.org). Why can?t I receive the digital version of DW-RADIO? You will need the appropriate receiver to receive digital DW-RADIO. Moreover, the reception of digital programming is dependent on a number of factors. Reception can often be improved when the receiver is positioned in a different spot. It is better when the receiver is placed near a window and away from sources of disruption like florescent lights. It is important to ascertain if the receiver isn?t receiving anything or is only receiving certain stations. Check to see if you can receive other stations, but not DW-RADIO when the receiver is in DRM mode. You should also check to see if Deutsche Welle appears as a station on the receiver?s display, but can?t be heard. The information you provide will help us and the manufacturers to answer your questions and requests. Your receiver?s instruction manual will help with the recognition of this kind of information. . Are analog shortwave receivers suitable for DRM reception? No, but in some cases it is possible to modify the existing analog shortwave receiver and to connect it to a PC (equipped with special software). Why doesn?t Deutsche Welle use DAB? DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) was developed in the mid-80s as a successor to VHF. It serves a more-closely defined geographic broadcasting area for close range. For DW?s worldwide broadcasting area, short, medium and long wave makes more sense ? and that?s where we can use DRM technology. What does digital mean? Noise-free radio programs on short, medium and long waves - that is the simple, yet precise, description of what DRM delivers. Up to now, the reception of (analog) programs in these frequency ranges has always been highly prone to disturbances, with noise, fading and other kinds of interference reducing the audibility and listening pleasure. Digital transmissions are completely different ? and that is based on the difference between analog and digital signals. Is it possible to transmit text with DRM? DRM can be used to transmit virtually all kinds of data. Deutsche Welle currently transmits its name as well as other information, like headlines from DW-WORLD.DE. In test operations, DW also transmitted additional information and even pictures. Do radio stations need new transmitters to transmit DRM signals? Many existing transmitters which are now being used for analog broadcasts can be modified so that they will be suitable for DRM. Our current DRM test is run using modified transmitters. In some cases, however, a modification of the existing equipment is not worthwhile and the installation of a new transmitter more favorable. Both older modified transmitters and new DRM transmitters can be used for analog transmissions as well. DRM transmitters can even be used to broadcast of analog and digital signals parallel. I have heard that there is more than one digital AM system. Is that true? The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) recommends digital broadcasts below 30 MHz. This recommendation concerns the DRM system used for long wave, medium wave and shortwave, and is currently being developed for VHF. More and more countries are establishing a legal or regulatory level for DRM, or are endorsing it as a recommended technology ? including France, Australia and India. In the USA, the IBiquity System is also being used for medium wave and VHF ? also known as HD radio. The DRM Consortium is cooperating with iBiquity. Perspectives in Research & Devel.in Agri.Sys. (02047593) INTRODUCTION Two assigned papers concern about sufficient food for the future. In the first paper it suppose to break the yield barriers and in the second paper it suppose to models and figure to serve the human in the future with healty food. Both papers did not get obvious solutions on basis of FTA and carbon credit but it was proven to be true that those two serious problems concern to all subjects exist in this world. In my opinion, those two factors are one of threshold or limiting factor in Reverse Threshold Model Theory (RTMT). On the same mother nature, different scientist has there own methods to explain to what it was happen. Some explainations even if they are contradict to each others but it was proven to be both correct. However, in those two assigned papers, it was most likely they jump to the wrong conclusion. Because both papers restrict themselves under limitted shell of knowledges namely conventional scientifics methods. The first paper jump to the wrong conclusion that yield barrier must be broken. That is one track way of thought. The second paper also narrow down their choice only to healthy food and restricted models they assumed. The thruth is mother nature did not totally fall in the way they assumed. Our objective for this analysis are 1. to provide background knowledges about Free Trade Area (FTA) and carbonFootprinting plus carbon credit. 2. to provide way of thought for the same problems under another shell namely ?Research and Development? MATERIAL AND METHODS Two papers were given to be read and analyse since at the beginning of the class and the dead line was delayed to the end of semister. Students have to collect information on their own choice to have sufficient information to support or argue with the both papers. After reading all information, analysis on the two objective have to be concluded with supported scientific reasons. Reference pattern is not state so I prefer to give the whole data I have and summary of source of reference at the end without cross reference to the context I will give later. RESULTS After several times reading and analysing by comparing to data that I collect myself and with 56 years of experience working as a scientist , I found that both papers jump to the wrong conclusion and mis-understand the true mother nature. The second paper try to convince reader by giving a lot of fact and figure from several source, e.g. Agricultural Knowledges Science and Technology (AKST), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Assessment of Agricultural Scientific and Technology for Development (IAASTD) and etc. But those sources of information gave only part of the truth and indexes with the wrong key performance in the way called ?systemic thinking?. In the true mother nature, system they assumed did not exist. The first paper try to convince us by giving evidence trace back to Darvin in 1859 up to recent single nucliotide polomorphism (SNP) technology today. And jump to the wrong concentrations that yield barriers can be broken genetically only. I disagree with this conclusion using His Majesty the King principal of Self Sufficient Economy (SSE) philosophy and Reverse Threshold Model Theory (RTMT). DISCUSSIONS In the first paper, it suppose that transfering plants to C4 photosynthesis will lead to physiological maxima. By this way, it will affect to not only carbon credit concept but also ecology of our world. It may decrease CO2 emission but proportion of plants in this world will be changed and lead to ecological changed. We do not know those effect yet but in the past it was proven that when the first limiting factor was swept out then the second limiting factor will take place to be the next first limiting factor and most time it always has biger undesirable effect. For example, we get rid off several diseases but now it was replaced by new severe diseases namely HIV, cancer, avien flu, etc. It was cited that Monsanto, in 2008, has confirmed that they can twice their yield in 2030. I suppose it will be done using monoclonal F1 hybrid plants. In view of carbon credit , it may reduce carbon emission because those F1 hybrid may have efficient utilization of carbon in the air and cause positive effect to global warming. But it will increase chance for disease to destroy thos crops in much higher effect because diversity of genetic materials was reduced. Also, ecosystem was surely negatively changed. We still don't know total effect of both side but in the past, it always be proven that single track way of thought always wrong. For example, in building the dam we never think it can change the sea ecology until today we found that building the dam has negative effect more than positive effect. I presume that the same will happen to Monsanto way of thought. It also cited that Cliff Weil (2008) using breeding program on basis of diversity of germ plasm but the rate at this moment come to the point of diminishing returns. They jump to this wrong conclusion because they narrow the plants and animals down to only economics plants and animals. There are still contain with abundance among organism that is not defined under economics important. True reasons that decrease genetics variation in economics plants and animals come from population genetics principal of selection. On path way of selection, several undesirable genes were converged to zero in variation. The author of the first paper suggest that precision phenotyping also will be a key stone of the solution. They suggest to have more precise measurement. This was opposite to RTMT way of thought. Phenotypes always compose of random errors so it was useless to measure it precisely. The correct solution is to get rid off those random error and get the true genotype hidden. New technique that can have higher efficient in prediction of true genotype was given by Faarungsang since 1995. Unfortunately it did not published in higher impact fator journals. It does not matter, because now under RTMT, 100% of random errors can be swept out and Faarungsang plan to published it in Nature that have the highest impact factor of the world. It was claimed that golden rice is a good example of successful application of GMO plant. But, those are one of narrowed mind thinking. It was useless to produce golden rice because it was cheaper to produce carotine in pumpkin. To throw one pumpkin in rice cooker will be higher in efficiency in cooking with pure golden rice. Human never eat pure rice as their food. They always eating rice with source of protein unless they want to be mal nutrition with lack of protein. I agree with one sentence given in the first paper that learning from the past should help us enhance yield in the future. But the sum of paper never think that way but stuborn to introduced bad technology that was proven to be wrong. At the end of he first paper, it cited Bill Gates words about new business model called ?Creative capitalism? with motivation to help human. But in real life, Bill Gates was proven to be faied in doing so. He buy netscape to freeze it progress to force its slave to use only bad browser namely IE. On the last sentence of the first paper, it gave a woderful words ?to answer a question , the question must first be asked? . So, my question to him is : ?Are you sure to narrow down genetics variation by producing economic crops and animals are the solution?? My answer is ?NO. It was wrong to apply sytematic thinking to solve those problem?. Because solving only yield problem will always lead to much more serious problem in the future. For paper number 2, it gave mostly faked figures from several respectable sources but I did not trust on those source any more because I see that they are all one track mined person way of thinking with wrong key performance index. Those organization always be proven to blind us with part of true figures but behind those figures it was simply a lie to make them to get maximum profit not to help the world to utilise resource wisely at all. At this moment they produce ethanol fron sugar cane instead off produce it for food to the poor in the third world countries including Thailand. Concerning FTA discussions, both papers gave no explicit sentences to be cited but what they hide to us is to force all poor countries to swallow those ugly law on FTA on reasons that if you cannot produce it efficiently while not let higher technological countries to produce it and spread it to your countries without tax. They forget to think globally that even Thailand cannot beat Australia and New Zealand on milk production but Thailand need to produce milk on their own because it has so many poor to earn their money from milk production. When it has economics crisis then it was agriculture who play important role in letting the poor to have place to work instead off becoming unemployed persons as it was happen in several states in USA at this time. The second objective of this report is to give another way of thought using Research and Development (R&D) mind to solve the same problems cited in the both papers. For R&D minded scientist, it will not only to solve problem by scientific systematic system but they have to concern on the following issue 1. sustainability, 2. global effects, 3. SSE, 4. Ecology, 5. Social effect, and etc. The major problems stated in both papers are 1. there will lack off food for 9000 million persons in 2050. 2. new genetics techniques are the last hope to have sufficient food in 2050. For R&D minded scientist, what the two papers said is only part of the truth to frighten us to swallow their rules and becoming their slave as Bill Gates already did and Faarungsang did already gave R&D solution by making android and SSS philosophy. It was true that food may not sufficient to feed 9000 million persons. But in both papers it never say another part of the truth that we have more than 9000 million pigs and chicken to eat the same food that we eat. Why not feed corn and sy bean directly to human instead off feeding them indirectly to animals? They did not told us to produce 1 tank of ethanol to feed a truck to drive across USA can have equally enegy for the poor in Thailand for a year but they still produce ethanol for money instead of feeding sugar directly to human. Both papers never mention the different in water consumption in the rich tourist in Thailand compared to water consumption among the poor TH farmers. Ghandi the great was said ?We have sufficient resource to feed the whole world but we never have sufficient food for only one greedy person?. The true reason is we did not lack of food. What we lack is equal in opportunity to comsume the food. CONCLUSIONS Both papers gave us only part of the truth and hide several information benefit to solve the same problem in R&D way of thought. The true mother nature never follow their way of thought but it was them who have to adapt their way of thought to fit to the true mother nature. The reason our world was won because it allow bad scientist to give theirs narrow solutions that destroyed our mother nature to alive and being respect on honoring them to have a Nobel prize and forget the true scientist that gave the correct solution to our world namely ?unsung hero? who solved Y2k problems and gave us solution to get rid off BillGates slavery under open source philosophy and SSE from HMJ the King. A carbon credit is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e).[1][2][3] Carbon credits and carbon markets are a component of national and international attempts to mitigate the growth in concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs). One carbon credit is equal to one ton of carbon dioxide, or in some markets, carbon dioxide equivalent gases. Carbon trading is an application of an emissions trading approach. Greenhouse gas emissions are capped and then markets are used to allocate the emissions among the group of regulated sources. The goal is to allow market mechanisms to drive industrial and commercial processes in the direction of low emissions or less carbon intensive approaches than those used when there is no cost to emitting carbon dioxide and other GHGs into the atmosphere. Since GHG mitigation projects generate credits, this approach can be used to finance carbon reduction schemes between trading partners and around the world. There are also many companies that sell carbon credits to commercial and individual customers who are interested in lowering their carbon footprint on a voluntary basis. These carbon offsetters purchase the credits from an investment fund or a carbon development company that has aggregated the credits from individual projects. The quality of the credits is based in part on the validation process and sophistication of the fund or development company that acted as the sponsor to the carbon project. This is reflected in their price; voluntary units typically have less value than the units sold through the rigorously validated Clean Development Mechanism[4]. Definitions The Collins English Dictionary defines a carbon credit as ?a certificate showing that a government or company has paid to have a certain amount of carbon dioxide removed from the environment?.[1] The Environment Protection Authority of Victoria defines a carbon credit as a ?generic term to assign a value to a reduction or offset of greenhouse gas emissions.. usually equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e).?[2] The Investopedia Inc investment dictionary defines a carbon credit as a ?permit that allows the holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide?..which ?can be traded in the international market at their current market price?.[3] Background Burning of fossil fuels is a major source of industrial greenhouse gas emissions, especially for power, cement, steel, textile, fertilizer and many other industries which rely on fossil fuels (coal, electricity derived from coal, natural gas and oil). The major greenhouse gases emitted by these industries are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), etc, all of which increase the atmosphere's ability to trap infrared energy and thus affect the climate. The concept of carbon credits came into existence as a result of increasing awareness of the need for controlling emissions. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has observed[5] that: Policies that provide a real or implicit price of carbon could create incentives for producers and consumers to significantly invest in low-GHG products, technologies and processes. Such policies could include economic instruments, government funding and regulation, while noting that a tradable permit system is one of the policy instruments that has been shown to be environmentally effective in the industrial sector, as long as there are reasonable levels of predictability over the initial allocation mechanism and long-term price. The mechanism was formalized in the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement between more than 170 countries, and the market mechanisms were agreed through the subsequent Marrakesh Accords. The mechanism adopted was similar to the successful US Acid Rain Program to reduce some industrial pollutants. Emission allowances Under the Kyoto Protocol, the 'caps' or quotas for Greenhouse gases for the developed Annex 1 countries are known as Assigned Amounts and are listed in Annex B.[6] The quantity of the initial assigned amount is denominated in individual units, called Assigned amount units (AAUs), each of which represents an allowance to emit one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent, and these are entered into the country's national registry.[7] In turn, these countries set quotas on the emissions of installations run by local business and other organizations, generically termed 'operators'. Countries manage this through their national registries, which are required to be validated and monitored for compliance by the UNFCCC.[8] Each operator has an allowance of credits, where each unit gives the owner the right to emit one metric tonne of carbon dioxide or other equivalent greenhouse gas. Operators that have not used up their quotas can sell their unused allowances as carbon credits, while businesses that are about to exceed their quotas can buy the extra allowances as credits, privately or on the open market. As demand for energy grows over time, the total emissions must still stay within the cap, but it allows industry some flexibility and predictability in its planning to accommodate this. By permitting allowances to be bought and sold, an operator can seek out the most cost-effective way of reducing its emissions, either by investing in 'cleaner' machinery and practices or by purchasing emissions from another operator who already has excess 'capacity'. Since 2005, the Kyoto mechanism has been adopted for CO2 trading by all the countries within the European Union under its European Trading Scheme (EU ETS) with the European Commission as its validating authority.[9] From 2008, EU participants must link with the other developed countries who ratified Annex I of the protocol, and trade the six most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gases. In the United States, which has not ratified Kyoto, and Australia, whose ratification came into force in March 2008, similar schemes are being considered. Kyoto's 'Flexible mechanisms' A tradable credit can be an emissions allowance or an assigned amount unit which was originally allocated or auctioned by the national administrators of a Kyoto-compliant cap-and-trade scheme, or it can be an offset of emissions. Such offsetting and mitigating activities can occur in any developing country which has ratified the Kyoto Protocol, and has a national agreement in place to validate its carbon project through one of the UNFCCC's approved mechanisms. Once approved, these units are termed Certified Emission Reductions, or CERs. The Protocol allows these projects to be constructed and credited in advance of the Kyoto trading period. The Kyoto Protocol provides for three mechanisms that enable countries or operators in developed countries to acquire greenhouse gas reduction credits[10] Under Joint Implementation (JI) a developed country with relatively high costs of domestic greenhouse reduction would set up a project in another developed country. Under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) a developed country can 'sponsor' a greenhouse gas reduction project in a developing country where the cost of greenhouse gas reduction project activities is usually much lower, but the atmospheric effect is globally equivalent. The developed country would be given credits for meeting its emission reduction targets, while the developing country would receive the capital investment and clean technology or beneficial change in land use. However, geologists from Cass Business School are sceptical on this program, arguing that the introduction of carbon credits does little to encourage companies to reduce emissions and instead allows the existence of 'carbon cowboys'. Under International Emissions Trading (IET) countries can trade in the international carbon credit market to cover their shortfall in Assigned amount units. Countries with surplus units can sell them to countries that are exceeding their emission targets under Annex B of the Kyoto Protocol. These carbon projects can be created by a national government or by an operator within the country. In reality, most of the transactions are not performed by national governments directly, but by operators who have been set quotas by their country. Emission markets For trading purposes, one allowance or CER is considered equivalent to one metric ton of CO2 emissions. These allowances can be sold privately or in the international market at the prevailing market price. These trade and settle internationally and hence allow allowances to be transferred between countries. Each international transfer is validated by the UNFCCC. Each transfer of ownership within the European Union is additionally validated by the European Commission. Climate exchanges have been established to provide a spot market in allowances, as well as futures and options market to help discover a market price and maintain liquidity. Carbon prices are normally quoted in Euros per tonne of carbon dioxide or its equivalent (CO2e). Other greenhouse gasses can also be traded, but are quoted as standard multiples of carbon dioxide with respect to their global warming potential. These features reduce the quota's financial impact on business, while ensuring that the quotas are met at a national and international level. Currently there are five exchanges trading in carbon allowances: the Chicago Climate Exchange, European Climate Exchange, Nord Pool, PowerNext and the European Energy Exchange. Recently, NordPool listed a contract to trade offsets generated by a CDM carbon project called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). Many companies now engage in emissions abatement, offsetting, and sequestration programs to generate credits that can be sold on one of the exchanges. At least one private electronic market has been established in 2008: CantorCO2e.[11] Managing emissions is one of the fastest-growing segments in financial services in the City of London with a market estimated to be worth about ?30 billion in 2007. Louis Redshaw, head of environmental markets at Barclays Capital predicts that "Carbon will be the world's biggest commodity market, and it could become the world's biggest market overall."[12] Setting a market price for carbon This section includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate. (August 2008) Unchecked, energy use and hence emission levels are predicted to keep rising over time. Thus the number of companies needing to buy credits will increase, and the rules of supply and demand will push up the market price, encouraging more groups to undertake environmentally friendly activities that create carbon credits to sell. An individual allowance, such as an Assigned amount unit (AAU) or its near-equivalent European Union Allowance (EUA), may have a different market value to an offset such as a CER. This is due to the lack of a developed secondary market for CERs, a lack of homogeneity between projects which causes difficulty in pricing, as well as questions due to the principle of supplementarity and its lifetime. Additionally, offsets generated by a carbon project under the Clean Development Mechanism are potentially limited in value because operators in the EU ETS are restricted as to what percentage of their allowance can be met through these flexible mechanisms. Yale University economics professor William Nordhaus argues that the price of carbon needs to be high enough to motivate the changes in behavior and changes in economic production systems necessary to effectively limit emissions of greenhouse gases. Raising the price of carbon will achieve four goals. First, it will provide signals to consumers about what goods and services are high-carbon ones and should therefore be used more sparingly. Second, it will provide signals to producers about which inputs use more carbon (such as coal and oil) and which use less or none (such as natural gas or nuclear power), thereby inducing firms to substitute low-carbon inputs. Third, it will give market incentives for inventors and innovators to develop and introduce low-carbon products and processes that can replace the current generation of technologies. Fourth, and most important, a high carbon price will economize on the information that is required to do all three of these tasks. Through the market mechanism, a high carbon price will raise the price of products according to their carbon content. Ethical consumers today, hoping to minimize their ?carbon footprint,? have little chance of making an accurate calculation of the relative carbon use in, say, driving 250 miles as compared with flying 250 miles. A harmonized carbon tax would raise the price of a good proportionately to exactly the amount of CO2 that is emitted in all the stages of production that are involved in producing that good. If 0.01 of a ton of carbon emissions results from the wheat growing and the milling and the trucking and the baking of a loaf of bread, then a tax of $30 per ton carbon will raise the price of bread by $0.30. The ?carbon footprint? is automatically calculated by the price system. Consumers would still not know how much of the price is due to carbon emissions, but they could make their decisions confident that they are paying for the social cost of their carbon footprint. Nordhaus has suggested, based on the social cost of carbon emissions, that an optimal price of carbon is around $30(US) per ton and will need to increase with inflation. The social cost of carbon is the additional damage caused by an additional ton of carbon emissions. ... The optimal carbon price, or optimal carbon tax, is the market price (or carbon tax) on carbon emissions that balances the incremental costs of reducing carbon emissions with the incremental benefits of reducing climate damages. ... [I]f a country wished to impose a carbon tax of $30 per ton of carbon, this would involve a tax on gasoline of about 9 cents per gallon. Similarly, the tax on coal-generated electricity would be about 1 cent per kWh, or 10 percent of the current retail price. At current levels of carbon emissions in the United States, a tax of $30 per ton of carbon would generate $50 billion of revenue per year.[13] How buying carbon credits can reduce emissions This section includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate. (August 2008) See also: Economics of global warming Carbon credits create a market for reducing greenhouse emissions by giving a monetary value to the cost of polluting the air. Emissions become an internal cost of doing business and are visible on the balance sheet alongside raw materials and other liabilities or assets. For example, consider a business that owns a factory putting out 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in a year. Its government is an Annex I country that enacts a law to limit the emissions that the business can produce. So the factory is given a quota of say 80,000 tonnes per year. The factory either reduces its emissions to 80,000 tonnes or is required to purchase carbon credits to offset the excess. After costing up alternatives the business may decide that it is uneconomical or infeasible to invest in new machinery for that year. Instead it may choose to buy carbon credits on the open market from organizations that have been approved as being able to sell legitimate carbon credits. We should consider the impact of manufacturing alternative energy sources. For example, the energy consumed and the Carbon emitted in the manufacture and transportation of a large wind turbine would prohibit a credit being issued for a predetermined period of time. One seller might be a company that will offer to offset emissions through a project in the developing world, such as recovering methane from a swine farm to feed a power station that previously would use fossil fuel. So although the factory continues to emit gases, it would pay another group to reduce the equivalent of 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere for that year. Another seller may have already invested in new low-emission machinery and have a surplus of allowances as a result. The factory could make up for its emissions by buying 20,000 tonnes of allowances from them. The cost of the seller's new machinery would be subsidized by the sale of allowances. Both the buyer and the seller would submit accounts for their emissions to prove that their allowances were met correctly. Credits versus taxes Carbon credits and carbon taxes each have their advantages and disadvantages. Credits were chosen by the signatories to the Kyoto Protocol as an alternative to Carbon taxes. A criticism of tax-raising schemes is that they are frequently not hypothecated, and so some or all of the taxation raised by a government would be applied based on what the particular nation's government deems most fitting. However, some would argue that carbon trading is based around creating a lucrative artificial market, and, handled by free market enterprises as it is, carbon trading is not necessarily a focused or easily regulated solution. By treating emissions as a market commodity some proponents insist it becomes easier for businesses to understand and manage their activities, while economists and traders can attempt to predict future pricing using market theories. Thus the main advantages of a tradable carbon credit over a carbon tax are argued to be: the price may be more likely to be perceived as fair by those paying it.[14]. Investors in credits may have more control over their own costs.[citation needed] the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol help to ensure that all investment goes into genuine sustainable carbon reduction schemes through an internationally agreed validation process. some proponents state that if correctly implemented a target level of emission reductions may somehow be achieved with more certainty, while under a tax the actual emissions might vary over time. it may provide a framework for rewarding people or companies who plant trees or otherwise meet standards exclusively recognized as "green." The advantages of a carbon tax are argued to be: possibly less complex, expensive, and time-consuming to implement. This advantage is especially great when applied to markets like gasoline or home heating oil. perhaps some reduced risk of certain types of cheating, though under both credits and taxes, emissions must be verified. reduced incentives for companies to delay efficiency improvements prior to the establishment of the baseline if credits are distributed in proportion to past emissions. when credits are grandfathered, this puts new or growing companies at a disadvantage relative to more established companies. allows for more centralized handling of acquired gains worth of carbon is stabilized by government regulation rather than market fluctuations. Poor market conditions and weak investor interest have a lessened impact on taxation as opposed to carbon trading. Creating real carbon credits The principle of Supplementarity within the Kyoto Protocol means that internal abatement of emissions should take precedence before a country buys in carbon credits. However it also established the Clean Development Mechanism as a Flexible Mechanism by which capped entities could develop real, measurable, permanent emissions reductions voluntarily in sectors outside the cap. Many criticisms of carbon credits stem from the fact that establishing that an emission of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas has truly been reduced involves a complex process. This process has evolved as the concept of a carbon project has been refined over the past 10 years. The first step in determining whether or not a carbon project has legitimately led to the reduction of real, measurable, permanent emissions is understanding the CDM methodology process. This is the process by which project sponsors submit, through a Designated Operational Entity (DOE), their concepts for emissions reduction creation. The CDM Executive Board, with the CDM Methodology Panel and their expert advisors, review each project and decide how and if they do indeed result in reductions that are additional[15] Additionality and its importance This section includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate. (August 2008) It is also important for any carbon credit (offset) to prove a concept called additionality. The concept of additionality addresses the question of whether the project would have happened anyway, even in the absence of revenue from carbon credits. Only carbon credits from projects that are "additional to" the business-as-usual scenario represent a net environmental benefit. Carbon projects that yield strong financial returns even in the absence of revenue from carbon credits; or that are compelled by regulations; or that represent common practice in an industry are usually not considered additional, although a full determination of additionality requires specialist review. It is generally agreed that voluntary carbon offset projects must also prove additionality in order to ensure the legitimacy of the environmental stewardship claims resulting from the retirement of the carbon credit (offset). According the World Resources Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WRI/WBCSD)?: "GHG emission trading programs operate by capping the emissions of a fixed number of individual facilities or sources. Under these programs, tradable 'offset credits' are issued for project-based GHG reductions that occur at sources not covered by the program. Each offset credit allows facilities whose emissions are capped to emit more, in direct proportion to the GHG reductions represented by the credit. The idea is to achieve a zero net increase in GHG emissions, because each tonne of increased emissions is 'offset' by project-based GHG reductions. The difficulty is that many projects that reduce GHG emissions (relative to historical levels) would happen regardless of the existence of a GHG program and without any concern for climate change mitigation. If a project 'would have happened anyway,' then issuing offset credits for its GHG reductions will actually allow a positive net increase in GHG emissions, undermining the emissions target of the GHG program. Additionality is thus critical to the success and integrity of GHG programs that recognize project-based GHG reductions." Criticisms Environmental restrictions and activities have been imposed on businesses through regulation. Many are uneasy with this approach to managing emissions. The Kyoto mechanism is the only internationally agreed mechanism for regulating carbon credit activities, and, crucially, includes checks for additionality and overall effectiveness. Its supporting organisation, the UNFCCC, is the only organisation with a global mandate on the overall effectiveness of emission control systems, although enforcement of decisions relies on national co-operation. The Kyoto trading period only applies for five years between 2008 and 2012. The first phase of the EU ETS system started before then, and is expected to continue in a third phase afterwards, and may co-ordinate with whatever is internationally agreed at but there is general uncertainty as to what will be agreed in Post-Kyoto Protocol negotiations on greenhouse gas emissions. As business investment often operates over decades, this adds risk and uncertainty to their plans. As several countries responsible for a large proportion of global emissions (notably USA, Australia, China) have avoided mandatory caps, this also means that businesses in capped countries may perceive themselves to be working at a competitive disadvantage against those in uncapped countries as they are now paying for their carbon costs directly. A key concept behind the cap and trade system is that national quotas should be chosen to represent genuine and meaningful reductions in national output of emissions. Not only does this ensure that overall emissions are reduced but also that the costs of emissions trading are carried fairly across all parties to the trading system. However, governments of capped countries may seek to unilaterally weaken their commitments, as evidenced by the 2006 and 2007 National Allocation Plans for several countries in the EU ETS, which were submitted late and then were initially rejected by the European Commission for being too lax.[16] A question has been raised over the grandfathering of allowances. Countries within the EU ETS have granted their incumbent businesses most or all of their allowances for free. This can sometimes be perceived as a protectionist obstacle to new entrants into their markets. There have also been accusations of power generators getting a 'windfall' profit by passing on these emissions 'charges' to their customers.[17] As the EU ETS moves into its second phase and joins up with Kyoto, it seems likely that these problems will be reduced as more allowances will be auctioned. Establishing a meaningful offset project is complex: voluntary offsetting activities outside the CDM mechanism are effectively unregulated and there have been criticisms of offsetting in these unregulated activities. This particularly applies to some voluntary corporate schemes in uncapped countries and for some personal carbon offsetting schemes. There have also been concerns raised over the validation of CDM credits. One concern is related to the accurate assessment of additionality. Others relate to the effort and time taken to get a project approved. Questions may also be raised about the validation of the effectiveness of some projects; it appears that many projects do not achieve the expected benefit after they have been audited, and the CDM board can only approve a lower amount of CER credits. For example, it may take longer to roll out a project than originally planned, or an afforestation project may be reduced by disease or fire. For these reasons some countries place additional restrictions on their local implementations and will not allow credits for some types of carbon sink activity, such as forestry or land use projects. Historical production Where mineral salt has been readily obtainable it has long been mined. The salt mines of Hallstatt go back at least to the Iron Age. However, it has not been readily obtainable everywhere and the alternative coastal source has also been exploited for thousands of years. The principle of the production is the evaporation of the water from the brine of the sea. In warm and dry climates this may be done entirely by solar energy, but in other climates fuel must be used. For this reason, sea salt production is now almost entirely an industry of Mediterranean and other warm, dry climates. "Fleur de sel" sea salt, ?le de R?. Such places are today called salt works, instead of the older English word saltern. An ancient or medieval saltern could be established where there was: 1.Access to a market for the salt. 2.A gently-shelving coast, protected from exposure to the open sea. 3.A cheap and easily worked fuel supply; preferably, the sun. 4.Preferably, another trade such as pastoral farming and tanning so that it and the salt could each add value to the other in the form of leather or salted meat. In this way, salt marsh, pasture (salting), and salt works (saltern) enhanced each other economically. This was the economic pattern in the Roman and Medieval periods around The Wash, in eastern England. There, the tide brought the brine, the extensive saltings provided the pasture, the fens and moors provided the peat fuel, and the sun sometimes shone. Manual salt collection in Lake Retba, Senegal. The dilute brine of the sea was largely evaporated by the sun, and the concentrated slurry of salt and mud was scraped up. The slurry was washed with clean sea water so that the impurities settled out of the now concentrated brine. This was poured into shallow pans lightly baked from the local marine clay, which were set on fist-sized clay pillars over a peat fire for the final evaporation. The dried salt was then scraped out and sold. Composition Sea salt is primarily composed of the following ions,[5] listed in order of descending abundance by weight: Chloride (Cl-) 55.03% Sodium (Na+) 30.59% Sulfate (SO42-) 7.68% Magnesium (Mg2+) 3.68% Calcium (Ca2+) 1.18% Potassium (K+) 1.11% Bicarbonate (HCO3-) 0.41% Bromide (Br-) 0.19% Borate (BO33-) 0.08% Strontium (Sr2+) 0.04% Everything else 0.01% Although the salinity of sea water varies quite a bit worldwide, the relative abundances of the constituent ions remain the same. Taste A commercial pack of sea salt Gourmets often believe sea salt to be better than ordinary table salt in taste and texture,[6] though one cannot always taste the difference when dissolved. In applications where sea salt's coarser texture is retained, it can provide different mouth feel and changes in flavor due to its different rate of dissolution. The mineral content also affects the taste. It may be difficult to distinguish sea salt from other untreated salts, such as pink Himalayan salt, or grey colored rock salt. Sea salt is purified less than the high mineral pink salt. Health In traditional Korean cuisine, so-called "bamboo salt" is prepared by roasting salt at temperatures between 800 and 2000??C[7] in a bamboo container plugged with mud at both ends. This product absorbs minerals from the bamboo and the mud, and has been shown to increase the anticlastogenic and antimutagenic properties of the fermented soybean paste known in Korea as doenjang.[8] Because sea salt generally lacks high concentrations of iodine,[2] an element essential for human health,[9] it is not necessarily a healthful substitute for regular iodized table salt,[10] which is usually supplemented with the element, unless another source of dietary iodine is available (such as dairy products or regular processed foods).[2] Iodized forms of sea salt are now marketed to address this concern.[citation needed] A salt mill for sea salt. ????????????? ????????? ???????? ???????? ????????????????????????? ???????? ???????? ?????????????????????? Salt products Salt is the common name for the substance sodium chloride (NaCl), which occurs in the form of transparent cubic crystals. Salt producers use three basic technologies to create salt for its multi-uses. Millions years ago, some sea had been dried and salts had been buried under earth. The concentrated salt sedimentary layers can exceed fifty feet in thickness. There are two technologies to exploit these underground deposits: conventional shaft mining where miners go underground to remove solid rock salt and solution mining where water is pumped underground dissolving the solid salt and then pumping out the salty brine which is de-watered to crystallize the salt. The third method extracts salt from oceans and saline lakes, growing salt crystals much as a farmer grows crops of vegetables or grain. Respectively, the products of these technologies are known as rock salt, evaporated salt (or vacuum pan salt) and solar (or sea) salt ?The Salt Institute, 2010a?. Worldwide, salt production tracks consumption which reflects population growth (food salt) and industrial development (chemical salt, salt for animal nutrition, roadway safety, water conditioning, etc. Salt production globally was about 250 million tons in 2006. China and United State is the top 2 salt producers in the world, the total production of the two countries is about 40% of total production of the world. The world salt production from 1985-2007 are showed in the following figure. Figure 1: world salt production 1985-2007 Source: The Salt Institute, http://www.saltinstitute.org/Production-industry/Facts-figures/World-salt-production As indicated by the Salt Research Institute, salt has more than 14,000 know uses. Among those usages, the most common one is that salt can be used as food ingredient. Although salt is most familiar as a food supplement, it is only occupy a very small amount. Industries use most of the salt produced in the world today. The biggest single use of salt is also one of the least known. Salt is the feedstock for the chlor-alkali chemical industry, just as oil is for the petrochemical industry. Manufacturing textiles, glass, rubber, leather, even drilling oil wells, depends on salt (The Salt Institute, 2010b). Commercial solar salt is produced by natural evaporation of seawater or brine in large, diked, earthen concentration ponds called condensers. Seawater averages about 3.5% NaCl (salty lakes like the Dead Sea and the Great Salt Lake can be much higher) when it enters the condensers. Climate is very important in solar salt production. The sun and wind provide the energy to evaporate the water and raise the salt concentration to the point of crystallization, 25.8% NaCl (25.4o B?). As the water concentrates, calcium carbonate is the first chemical to crystallize. By moving the increasingly-saline brine through a series of ponds, the calcium carbonate is thus removed from the final salt product. When the concentration has increased to the most favorable crystallizing level, 26o B?, the brine is introduced into the crystallizing ponds. As salt crystallization proceeds, the concentration continues to increase. At 29 or 30o B? between 72% and 79% of the total salt has been crystallized. Proper brine control during concentration and crystallization results in salt of purity of >99.7% NaCl. The crystallizing pond is then drained of the remaining highly concentrated magnesium brine (called ?bitterns? because of its taste) which are either discharged or further processed for other minerals. Manual or mechanic harvester equipment then strips the newly-deposited layer of salt crystals and they are washed (in clean brine to prevent loss), crushed and sometimes dried in kilns or fluidized-beds driers(The Salt Institute,2010c). Nowadays, large quantity of salt is produced by factory. But in some countries some farmers are still using traditional method to produce sea salt. Some high quality salt products are produced with traditional method. With the local wisdom, Thai farmers developed a special fertilizer using waster of salt production ?dog skin?. ?Dog skin? is a kind of waste of salt production which normally be discarded in the past time. But Thai farmer find that the ?dog skin? can be used as fertilizer for orchard with salty soil. Beside successful exploit the utilization of ?dog skin?, Thai farmers also conducted several experiments on salt production. Several products with different function have been developed such as cosmetic salt, salt for bath, and salt fishery. Yesterday, a respectable professor namely Dr. Charan giving an excellent teaching to our class. I assign my student to sit in his teachers. Firstly students deny my command. I have to go out the class room to drag the students to sit in the class. This morning, one student come to my office. I ask her "How about Dr. Charan's teaching" She agree that he gave a very simple excellent talk. Reason, she deny to attend the class at the beginning becauseit was a PhD class and she think it must be hard and she expect that she cannot understand it. That was her prior probability proven "WRONG" Actually, I don't have to ask her because I know well that Dr. Charan can gave teaching to the most stupid persons in TH to understand him well. The same happen to all classes in KU. It has no need to make evaluation from students and beleive in those lies because it was the fact that most classes in KU are bad teaching that most students cannot understand it. However, it was sad that at this moment most bad bosses believe on those lie and think that most class are good in teaching. I told Dr. Charan yesterday that most of teacher in KU can teach on his topic BUT it was impossible to be as good as teaching given by him alive. THAT is reason why it need to invite him to talk yesterday. Regards, supat ????????????????????????? I try to cut my slide down to exactly 18 slides as I show it to you in the attachment. BUT, I am sure I will spend 1 hour for those 18 slides. Imagine, we have 13 students. Each was expected to use 1 hour long for their hard work. I prepare this 18 slides for several days of work. I am sure every one did pay several days to do their jobs. That is reason we need 1 hour to show our hard work :) My consult is how we can manage to have our presentation in 6 hours limit of the class. (to change slide of 13 students may take hour long already) You used to tell me to present our work on the TRIP because we have 4x24 hours to freely present our works but our teacher deny to agree with us. Please give me your solution. Regards, supat -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Fact and Figure on Food Happen to me in the past 5 days!!! I was unexpectedly reduce food from 5 meals a day down to 2 meals a day without preparation. In my life only one day I remember no solid food for 24 hours because the MD want to examine my large intestine so they gave me LAHUNG oil and ask me to stop solid food for 24 hours long. BUT that time I have unlimited soy bean milk in replace of solid food. Last friday our class was assigned to have outside study. The teachers told us to prepare 2 white shirt for 2 days long. I don't know that in 2 days long will not have dinner. We do have dinner on Friday but not on saturday, sunday and monday. And for me, I prolong have no dinner on tuesday, wednesday. In my life time I have 5 meals during: 1. 6.00 ? 7.00 breakfast 2. 11.00 ? 12.00 lunch 3. 15.30 ? 16.30 extra lunch 4. 18.30 ? 20.30 dinner 5. 23.00 ? 24.00 before sleep Each meal take around 10 minutes eating. After I reduced meals from 5 to 2 meals what is fact and figure happen to me are 1. no hungry happen at all for the whole 5 days 2. no stomach symptom exist (I use to have ?rok ka prao?) 3. surpricingly the quantity of feces reduced to one-third of normal feces MY conclusion is : 1. we eat too much in our life and cause obesety 2. after reduced meals our body adapt itself to have higher efficiency in absorbtion. i.e. too much meal the food simply pass thru to be feces and waste of energy and nutrient. 3. I expect life will be longer because our organs not have to have hard work for 24 hours long but reduced to only at most 6 hours long (morning and lunch is only less than 6 hours) All I said above is the whole truth and nothing but the truth happen to me in the past 5 days.
